New
York City Team Handball Club celebrates after receiving
first place medals Sunday at the 2009 Club National
Championships in Elgin, IL.
Chicago Inter trailed in much of the first half
before pulling ahead of the Lady Condors just before the
break. The two-time champs pulled away in the second
half, before the Condors made a late run to make the
final 28-25. |
Chicago swept individual awards as well on their
undefeated run through the tournament, winning the Most
Valuable Goalkeeper (Katarina Husova), the Grundfos Most
Valuable Player award and the Select Sport USA Top
Scorer (both Jolanta Kunickite) awards. The Lady
Condors were led by Canadian National Team standout
Amber Smart, Szabina Kiss and USA National Team veteran
Latrice Lewis.
The Houston Firehawks won the Bronze Medal.
On the men's side, the Houston Firehawks took NYC THC to
overtime before Gotham's "super club" prevailed for
their second consecutive national title. Houston led by
as many as nine goals in the second half before NYC
rallied. NYC tied the game with no time left on the
clock in regulation on a dramatic 7-meter throw and won
37-34. Zoran Ostojic was named the Grundfos MVP of the
